International Medical Volunteer Program For High Schoolers

In the International Volunteer Program For High Schoolers, students can join this service trip to provide medical relief to rural villages in Kenya and Cambodia. This program is though Jordan International Aid, a non-profit organization that provides disaster relief. The mission of this program is to give passionate high schoolers that are interested in the medical field a more in depth view of the medical field in an international setting. A student will participate in: packing medicine, recording vitals, performing POCT (point of care) testing (blood sugar, hemoglobin, urine pregnancy, syphillis, PSA), shadowing doctors and possibly colposcopy (cervical cancer screening by pelvic exam).  We work with the local hospital to set up a free tent clinic, and see up to 3,500 patients in one trip, a country record in Kenya. After three days of clinic, the trip ends with a 2 day safari which are exciting since in early August rare animals migrate to the Masai Mara. Our missions last a week.

Statements from students that have gone:

“Not only are students given the opportunity to interact with medicine internationally, but the small and highly individualistic missions allow high school students to take initiative in a way that isn’t seen in any other program/internship. For example, I’ve built relationships with the Kenyan cervical cancer team. This last summer, they let me perform over 20 colposcopys, a procedure that is usually done only in the years of residency. ”
